Season Six- Coming To a Close!

Although we at the Day By Day Warming Shelter are sad to say that once again it’s time to close our doors until this coming fall, we want to time to recognize all of the positive changes and celebratory moments we have had this season. When we first opened our doors during season one our mission was solely to provide a warm bed and meal to keep our guests alive on a day by day basis. Now, in season six, with the addition of we have had leaps and bounds with our growth--let’s recap!

Frontline Staff Attending Fall Training

Before we opened for season six we had already reached a milestone in July of 2016 (three months before the start of the season) when Day By Day welcomed Lorraine Yarbrough, the first ever full time executive director, into our program. Lorraine’s energy and presence at the shelter propelled us off to a great start for season six! Within just a few weeks of having our meal team calendar open all spots were filled--yet another fantastic way to start out our new shelter year!

The shelter was honored to participate in the 5th annual Chili Cook Off held by the Oshkosh Rotary just days before we opened in October. The Cook Off was but another great start to our busy season! In October we also were able to welcome 13 frontline staff members to training for their positions. With having our frontline staff members trained and anxiously awaiting, we opened our doors on October 15th to start the sixth season.

The shelter season seemed to fly by with many exciting events taking place; from musical entertainment in the shelter to every guest receiving boots for Christmas, the shelter truly was blessed in many ways this year! Not only did our guests love the entertainment and supportive donations they received but all of the time donated from our hospitality volunteers and meal teams are irreplaceable to all of us here at the shelter. This season we’ve had over 340 different volunteers log over 2,000 hours of volunteered time! We would like to give one last thank you from this season to all of our volunteers: whether you served a meal, participated as a hospitality volunteer or donated time in another form, we couldn’t do this work without you!

Many of the positive events mentioned above are things to celebrate but our most celebrated accomplishment of the season has been the successes our guests have obtained. We are beyond proud of our guests for the hard work they have put in this season. As of March 31st, eight guests were participating in volunteer work, 50 guests obtained jobs, and 73 were out of our shelter and into housing! The hard work and determination each one of them exuberated throughout their journey with us is no small feat. Congratulations to all of our guests who are reaching their own goals and working towards their dreams.

As doors are sadly coming to a close, we will be counting all of our blessings until the next season. Keep in touch with our blog and Facebook page to see our summer activity as we gear up for another ground breaking season seven this coming fall!
