Early this morning, volunteers and community agencies gathered at Day By Day Warming Shelter to provide a warm breakfast, as well as resources and information for anyone experiencing homelessness. By 9:00 AM, guests were arriving and the gym space was filled with the sound of friendly conversation and the aroma of freshly made sausage and eggs.
The Community Resource Fair and Breakfast is a biannual event, held in July and January, and promoted throughout the Oshkosh community. One of the hallmarks of the event is the offering of complimentary haircuts, provided by local stylists. Today's stylists represented Family Values Hair Salon and their chairs were filled for the entirety of the event. Guests in attendance ranged in age from 2 to 72, which added a true sense of community to the gathering.
The breakfast portion is fully funded, prepared, and served by volunteers. Today's group was comprised of shelter staff, board members, and longtime volunteers of the shelter. As is the case with many aspects of shelter operations, the event would not have been possible without the support of our wonderful volunteers. Community agencies also helped make the event a success. The following agencies were represented:
-Partnership Community Health Center
-Christine Ann Center
-Oshkosh and Winnebago County Housing Authority
-Winnebago County Department of Veterans Services
-Father Carr's Place 2B
-Office of Veterans Services
The power of connection is truly what makes the Community Resource Fair and Breakfast a special event. It's the young man demonstrating his uncanny ability to solve a Rubik's cube in less than 23 seconds. It's the three small children who jumped behind the food table to help serve the "customers" coming through the line. It's the man who enthusiastically compliments the quiche and recommends it to others. Day By Day Warming Shelter continues to be grateful to the many individuals who help make this event possible and to the guests, who make it worthwhile.
